SOS Fall Migration: A Celebration of Shag Dancing

The SOS (Society of Stranders) Fall Migration is a highlight of the beach music calendar. Running from September 12-22, 2024, this 10-day event has its roots in the rich history of the shag dance, a dance style native to the Carolinas. The shag, a swing dance with a distinctive, smooth style, became popular in the 1940s and 1950s, particularly along the Grand Strand of South Carolina.

The Society of Stranders (SOS) was formed in 1980 by a group of shag dance enthusiasts who wanted to celebrate and preserve the shag dance tradition. They organized their first Fall Migration event in 1981 as a way for shag dancers to gather, socialize, and dance together. The event quickly grew in popularity, becoming a staple in North Myrtle Beach’s cultural calendar.

During the SOS Fall Migration, North Myrtle Beach comes alive with block parties, dance lessons, and live music as shag dancers and music enthusiasts converge to celebrate the genre.  Venues like Fat Harold’s Beach Club and the OD Arcade and Lounge become the epicenter of festivities, where hundreds of shaggers fill the streets and clubs.  The event has grown into a major celebration, attracting shag dancers and music lovers from all over the country.
